Have you had a moment to hear the powerful stories shared this month as we focus on our work in Detroit and Wayne County?

These stories are too important not to hear!

First off, check out Raniyah’s quick story about how SAC helped her to graduate:

Raniyah’s mom, Tiffany, was one of our featured storytellers at our Story Drive Picnic on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. Can you imagine getting the call as a parent that your child is in trouble?

You can hear Tiffany’s story here:

Shakelah, a former SAC student, also talked about her experience with the SAC. With the help of her advocate Shakel, she learned to advocate for herself. You can hear more about her story.

City of Detroit Chief Storyteller Eric Thomas was also in attendance at our picnic, speaking about SAC’s work. “Student Advocacy Center does the kind of work that reminds you that outside of learning math and science, kids need love. They need to be cared about,” said Thomas. He stressed the importance of remembering that while there are a lot of ‘good kids,’ all kids are inherently good. You can hear more about what Eric shared.

SAC was proud to honor two amazing advocates for children, including Helen Moore, a community activist who fights tirelessly for educational equality, and Naomi Khalil,  DPSCD Senior Executive of Equity and Culture.

At the event, music was provided by Detroit School of Arts Choir and food was provided by our generous in-kind donations from Franklin Cider Mill, Dawn Keech, Frita Batidos, Zollipops, Ellis Isle, and Domino’s.

Delta Dental was a presenting sponsor. Other donors include our Academic All-Star Donor DTE Foundation, Honor Roll Donors Annie and Ned Staebler and Ruth and Andy Zweifler, Graduate Donors Level One Bank, Terri & Rich Gilbert and Mark Wallace, and Pep Squad Donors AaDya, Chelsea Brown, Julia Cohen, Mary Callaghan Lynch and John Tafelski and Nasseem Ramin.

The picnic was a part of the 30-day campaign occurring throughout the month of October. The campaign and generosity of our donors has made a lasting impact in children’s lives and in the community, allowing them to continue to write their next chapter.
