Exclusions
ADVOCATE FOR STUDENTS:
Raise a Strong Voice for Children
  • Demand accurate information about the number of and reasons for expulsions.
  • Spread the word about the negative effects of expulsion to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
  • Write your legislators about your concerns with public education in Michigan. Speak out about due process rights and alternatives to expulsion.
  • SAMPLE LETTER & QUICKGUIDE

Sample Letters make communication with schools easier for parents by providing a starting point for the advocacy process.
QuickGuides offer general explanations for understanding and retrieving information, as well as guidance in how to handle specific school-related situations.

Support the Student Advocacy Center in our stuggle to protect the educational rights of students.
    Exclusions include:
    • Detentions
    • In-school Suspensions
    • Out-of-school Suspensions
    • Expulsion

Exclusions occur when a school disallows a student to participate in something. This ranges from out of classroom suspensions, to bus suspension, all the way to permanent expulsion. There are state and federal laws that tell school officials how they are to go about 'excluding' students based on the student's behaviors. Each school district has a handbook that also lays out the procedures by which a student may and should be excluded. For this reason, it is not worth it to go into detail about detentions and in-school suspensions here. Contact your district office for rules and regulations about those things or see the Suspensions and Expulsions sections.
