Section 504:What is it and how can
I use it to my child's advantage?
This section contains a brief overview of Section 504, how Section
504 differs from Special Education Certification, things that
work well in Section 504 plans, and problems with Section 504.
Civil Rights Violations:
What are they and what can I do about them when they occur?
This section covers the definition of civil rights violations,
as well as unfair treatment based on race, gender, religion,
or handicap. This section also covers the difference between
Intermediate School District Complaints and Office for Civil
Rights Complaints, strategies and complaint offices.
Exclusions
Exclusions occur when a school disallows a student to participate
in something. This ranges from out of classroom suspensions,
to bus suspension, all the way to permanent expulsion. Exclusions
covered in this section are detentions, in-school suspensions,
out-of-school suspensions and expulsions.
Suspensions
Suspension is a short-term removal of a student from a classroom
environment. This suspension may be served in school, or out
of school. This section covers suspension law, the special education
protection and the difference between suspension for regular
and special education.
Expulsion
Expulsion is the formal removal of a student from an educational
setting. The procedure for expulsion varies tremendously based
on whether or not the student is special education. This section
covers exceptions to mandatory expulsion and strategies to deal
with expulsion.
Weapons Violations
There are actually federal laws about what schools must do with
students who are found bringing weapons to school. On a somewhat
positive note there are also some requirements about reporting
on weapons violations. This section on weapons violations covers
the zero Tolerance for Weapons, information on Expulsions and
Weapons Violation Strategies.
