GENERAL EDUCATION: THE BASIC FACTS

Definition

General education refers to the curriculum, classes and services provided to all students. Special education students are integrated fully or partially into general education classrooms with the extra supports stated in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Schools are required to place children with special education needs in the 'Least Restrictive Environment' where they will benefit from their educational program.

Issues that may arise in General Education

Teachers and classroom aides can be helpful resources in providing tips and assistance to help any struggling child. Children who are certified with a disability are legally entitled to additional supports provided by the school. If you believe your child may need additional educational supports, you may want to request an evaluation (see Quick Guide to Special Education Evaluations.)
